The Roman Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, is famously known for its massive arena styled battleground. Located in Rome, Italy, construction of this historical site started in 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian and was officially functional in 80 AD. The structure was seated in tiers, could accommodate up to 50,000 people, and used as entertainment for 390 years.
Events that took place at the colosseum included gladiator contests, mock battles, animal hunts, dramas based on classical mythology, re-enactments of famous battles & executions. As a gladiator, the only way to come out of the colosseum alive was to kill your opponent. In the early Medieval Era, it was used for workshops, and religious quarters amongst other uses.
Currently, the colosseum symbolizes a stand against capital punishment also known as the death penalty.
